What you'll do:

  • Provide a warm welcome to members and initiate group discussion where appropriate
  • Take notes for sharing with the group afterwards and for those unable to attend
  • Liaise with any venue staff and maintain our working relationship with them
  • Help set-up and clear away at the end of each session where necessary (in-person sessions only)

 Personal qualities most suited to the role:

  • Some prior knowledge about dementia through personal or professional experience
  • Awareness of the practical and emotional impact of caring for someone living with dementia and of the challenges faced by dementia carers who identify as LGBTQ+ and a willingness to learn more about this
  • Excellent social skills and the ability to encourage good group dynamics - being mindful of the social needs of members who are often vulnerable
  • Ability to use own initiative as required
  • Ability to volunteer regularly enough to ensure rapport with members
  • Good cultural sensitivity to the intersectional histories, needs and complexities of older LGBTQ+ communities
  • An understanding of the needs and rights of minoritised people and communities in relation to the Equality Act 2010 and being mindful and respectful of these needs and rights
