Research and Policy

One of the duties of Opening Doors is to gather evidence on the needs and experiences of older LGBTQ+ people in the UK. This evidence underpins all of the work and services that we provide.

Research and policy work at Opening Doors can take several forms: in-house research on the needs of our members; research in the wider LGBTQ+ community; and responses to reports by government bodies and other organisations.

The research we do is judged against a number of ethical principles: are we equipped to do the research and will it add to knowledge; are we fully informing those involved; are we ensuring confidentiality and anonymity; are we obtaining informed consent; and are we avoiding harm.

The partners in our research include: our volunteers and Ambassadors; researchers and research institutes; the health sector; and local, regional and national government.

On this page you can find out about ongoing research – and published reports – by Opening Doors, reflecting key issues affecting LGBTQ+ people over 50 and what needs to change.
